The 7°C rule

Winter tires are made from a softer rubber compound designed to stay flexible in cold temperatures. Once the average daily temperature consistently stays above 7°C, that soft compound becomes too pliable on warm pavement. The rubber wears faster, braking distances increase, and the tread pattern — designed to grip snow and ice — actually reduces traction on dry roads. The 7°C threshold is the point where summer or all-season tires outperform winter ones in every measurable way.

Ottawa's spring timeline

In a typical year, Ottawa's average daily temperature crosses the 7°C mark somewhere between mid-April and early May. Most drivers book their spring swap in the last two weeks of April or the first two weeks of May. That said, Ottawa weather is unpredictable — late-season snowfalls in April are not unusual. A good rule of thumb is to wait until overnight lows are consistently above freezing before switching. If you commute on the 417 or 174, err on the later side since highway speeds amplify the difference between tire compounds.

Risks of switching too early

Swapping to summer tires in late March or early April might seem proactive, but a single late snowstorm can leave you with dramatically reduced grip. Summer tires on snow or ice have almost no traction — stopping distances can double compared to winter tires. If you're caught in a spring storm on summer rubber, the safest move is to slow down significantly and avoid sudden braking or lane changes.

Risks of waiting too long

On the other hand, running winter tires into June accelerates tread wear. Hot pavement and warm air temperatures break down the softer rubber compound much faster than cold conditions. You could lose a full season of tire life by running winters through a warm spring. The tread also becomes noisier and less responsive in warm-weather handling. If your winters are already halfway through their tread life, every extra warm-weather kilometre counts.

Checklist before you switch

Before your swap appointment, take a minute to check a few things. Look at your summer tires' tread depth — if the wear indicators are flush with the tread surface, it's time for new tires, not a swap. Check the sidewalls for cracking or dry rot, which can develop during storage. Make sure your tires are accessible — in the garage, trunk, or beside the vehicle. If your wheels use a locking lug nut key, have it ready. And if you're storing your winters with us, we'll inspect them before they go into storage and let you know if anything needs attention.

Book your spring swap

Peak spring weeks fill up fast in Ottawa — especially the last week of April. Booking a few days ahead is the easiest way to get your preferred time slot. We come to your driveway, swap your tires, torque every lug nut to manufacturer spec, and check your pressures. The whole process is about 30 minutes per vehicle.
