In Ottawa, aim to have your winter tires on by late October or early November: before overnight temperatures sit around freezing and before the first real snowfall. To get the appointment time you want, book in early to mid-October. Waiting for the first snow is the most common mistake, because that is exactly when everyone else books too.
The 7°C rule
Tire makers use 7°C as the changeover point. Below about 7°C, the rubber in summer and all-season tires stiffens and loses grip, even on dry pavement. Winter tires use a softer compound that stays flexible in the cold, so they stop shorter and corner better on cold roads, not just on snow. In Ottawa, the average daily temperature usually drops below 7°C during the second half of October. When the forecast shows daytime highs in the single digits for a week or more, it is time.
When does it usually snow in Ottawa?
Ottawa often sees its first flurries in late October, and the first snowfall that sticks usually comes in November. Some years an early storm arrives in October and catches thousands of drivers on summer tires. If you live in Gatineau, book your swap in October or early November. The last two weeks of November are the busiest of the year on the Quebec side, and appointments disappear quickly.
Ontario: not required, but worth it
Ontario does not require winter tires, but Ontario auto insurers must offer a discount to drivers who use them. Ask your insurer how much you would save and whether they need proof of installation. The discount alone often covers a good part of your seasonal swap.
How to beat the fall rush
The first snowfall triggers the busiest week of the season: tire shops book up for weeks and waiting rooms fill with drivers who all had the same idea. Before your winter tires go on
Take a quick look at your winter set before your appointment. Finally, make sure your winter tires are already mounted on their own rims and that your locking wheel nut key is easy to find.
